Girl Scouts helping refugee family

Guest blog post by the Juniors of Troop 44290

We are Juniors from Girl Scout Troop 44290 at Harrison Elementary. To earn our Bronze Award, we are working with Lutheran Family Services to co-sponsor a refugee family in need of setting up a new home. We are collecting new or gently used goods and/or cash donations so we can provide a family everything they need to begin their new life. The family we are sponsoring is a Karen family from Burma who have been living in a refugee camp in Thailand. The parents are 30-40 years old and they have three children, 2 boys (ages 7 and 3) and a one year old little girl.

To participate, visit our SignUp List and select the item(s) you’d like to donate. We need to secure every item on the list or raise enough money to buy what we don’t get. Our deadline for signing up to donate an item is May 12th. Small items can be brought to Harrison Elementary and larger items will be collected during the evenings of May 9th and 12th and during the day on the 13th (by request only, be sure to include contact information in your sign up) in the Harrison/Dundee/Metcalfe/Benson neighborhood areas. Cash donations can be left with the school office or given directly to Katie Coughran or Nicole Brown. For collections outside the neighborhood, please contact us at so we can make alternative arrangements to collect your items.

Thank you for your help with our project!
